| Summary | "From its origins in the late nineteenth century, the Labour Party was uncomfortably divided between socialists who aimed for a radical transformation of society and the economy, and moderates who wished to improve the lot of the poor within the limits of the existing system. This division characterises the party to this very day. A Party with Socialists in It guides us from the foundation of the party through the celebrated government of Clement Attlee to the emergence of the New Left of the 1960s which was highly sceptical of the Labour Pary. It explores the radicalism of the Labour left during the 1970s and early 1980s, including the inspirational figure of Tony Benn, and then the decline and active suppression of the left with the rise of New Labour and Tony Blair's premiership. Under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, have the socialists in the party finally come to determine its course, or will the divisions at its heart eventually cause Corbyn's leadership to founder?" |
