In about 1916, a girl was born in the northern Ethiopian city of Gondar. Over the next century a feudal empress gave way to an all-powerful emperor, Mussolini invaded, the Allies bombed the streets of her childhood. Empire was swept away by revolution, and then by civil war -- and through it, all she raised a family, laughed with them and then fought for them, through cities and law courts, and ultimately before Emperor Hail S̈elassie himself. The Wife's Tale is an intimate biography of a rich, often misunderstood country, and of a quietly heroic life.
